Family Sponsorship Update — May 21, 2026
Thursday, May 21, 2026
Approximately 27% of inland spousal sponsorship applications submitted in 2025 (January–October) were rejected at the first screening stage (R10 completeness check) without ever being processed — representing 12,241 out of 45,235 applications reviewed.
As of March 2026, IRCC's official spousal sponsorship processing times are 16 months (Outland/outside Canada) and 25 months (Inland/within Canada), with Quebec-destined applications taking significantly longer due to the Canada–Quebec Accord.
Outland spousal sponsorship from outside Canada (excluding Quebec) is reported at 10 months processing time, while Quebec-destined outland applications take 36 months.
What You Should Do
- Before submitting an inland spousal sponsorship application, carefully review Regulation 10 (R10) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations to ensure your application is complete. Over 1 in 4 applications are rejected at the completeness check — verify all required forms (IMM 1344, IMM 5481, IMM 0008, and supporting documents) are included before submitting.
- Check IRCC's official processing times tool at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-processing-times.html to get the current estimated processing time for your specific application type (inland vs. outland, Quebec vs. non-Quebec).
- If you are sponsoring a spouse from outside Canada and your destination province is NOT Quebec, the current processing time is approximately 10 months. If your destination is Quebec, budget for up to 36 months and account for the additional provincial processing step under the Canada–Quebec Accord.
