Family Sponsorship Update — July 13, 2026
Monday, July 13, 2026
Quebec will reopen family sponsorship intake on July 2, 2026, accepting up to 15,700 applications over two years (13,300 for spouses, 2,400 for parents/grandparents); adult dependent children aged 18+ are now exempt from the cap.
The federal Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) 2025 intake is closed — 17,860 invitations were sent to 2020 interest-to-sponsor registrants, with a goal of 10,000 complete applications; new Ministerial Instructions take effect January 1, 2026, and details on the next intake have not yet been announced.
As of February 2026, family sponsorship processing times (including PGP) have decreased compared to January 2026, bucking the trend of rising wait times seen in temporary resident and citizenship categories.
What You Should Do
- If you are a sponsor in Quebec: Mark July 2, 2026 on your calendar and prepare your undertaking application for spouse (cap: 13,300) or parents/grandparents (cap: 2,400) sponsorship. Visit the MIFI website (immigration-quebec.gouv.qc.ca) for the application form and submission instructions — applications over the cap will be returned unfunded.
- If you have an adult dependent child (age 18-21) in Quebec: Confirm they are under 22, unmarried, and not in a common-law relationship, then plan to include them in your sponsorship undertaking starting July 2, 2026 — they are now exempt from the Quebec cap.
- If you were not invited to the 2025 federal PGP intake: Monitor canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/family-sponsorship/sponsor-parents-grandparents.html and IRCC's social media channels for announcements on the next PGP intake and interest-to-sponsor form opening.
- If you have a family sponsorship application already in process: Check current processing times at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-processing-times.html — PGP and other family sponsorship wait times have dropped as of February 2026.
