PR & Citizenship Update — July 9, 2026

Canada launched the In-Canada Workers Initiative (TR-to-PR pathway), a one-time program to fast-track up to 33,000 temporary workers to permanent residence in 2026–2027, targeting applicants already in the PNP, Atlantic Immigration Program, Rural/Francophone Community Pilots, Caregiver Pilots, and Agri-Food Pilot who have lived in smaller communities for at least two years.
IRCC made 112,600 permanent residence decisions and welcomed 285,500 new citizens between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026, signaling strong processing output.
Current PR processing times (as of March 2026) are approximately 7 months for CEC, FSWP, and Express Entry PNP streams, while Non-Express Entry PNP takes ~13 months and spousal sponsorship inside Canada takes ~21 months — though backlogs are growing.
What You Should Do
- If you have an existing PR application under PNP, Atlantic Immigration Program, Rural Community Immigration Pilot, Francophone Community Immigration Pilot, Caregiver Pilots, or Agri-Food Pilot and have lived in a smaller Canadian community for 2+ years, check your application status on the IRCC online portal (ircc.canada.ca) — you do NOT need to take any additional action, as IRCC will automatically identify and fast-track eligible applications.
- If you are eligible for the TR-to-PR pathway and currently waiting for your PR decision, confirm whether you qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) to maintain work authorization during processing — visit canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/work-canada/permit/bridging-open-work-permit.html.
- If you have a spousal sponsorship application inside Canada, be aware that processing is currently ~21 months; log into your IRCC account at ircc.canada.ca to verify your application status and ensure all documents are up to date to avoid delays.
- If you are on a citizenship pathway, note that grant processing is currently ~13 months and certificate processing ~10 months; track your application status at ircc.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/act-citizenship/check-status.html.
