PR & Citizenship Update — October 19, 2026

Monday, October 19, 2026

As of September 3, 2026, IRCC processing times rose by one month for Federal Skilled Worker Program (Express Entry) applications and spousal sponsorship outside Canada, with FSWP now at 7 months; CEC remained at 6 months.

Processing times shortened by one month for the Parents and Grandparents Program and for spousal sponsorship within Canada (outside Quebec) as of the same update.

IRCC recorded 112,600 permanent residence decisions from January to March 2026 and 83,000 new permanent residents between April 2025 and March 2026, reflecting continued processing throughput.

What You Should Do

  • Check the current IRCC processing time tool at canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-processing-times.html to get the most up-to-date estimate for your specific application type (FSWP, CEC, spousal sponsorship, PGP, or citizenship), as times are updated regularly and the September 3 data may have changed.
  • If you have a PR application in progress and hold a work permit expiring soon, confirm whether you qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) before your current permit expires — apply through your IRCC secure account at canada.ca before the expiry date to maintain status while you wait.
  • Spousal sponsorship applicants outside Canada (outside Quebec) should account for the one-month processing time increase (now longer as of September 3, 2026) when planning travel or employment arrangements — recheck current estimates at the IRCC processing times tool.
